When I decided to pursue a zero waste lifestyle, I found that in order to reduce my cosmetic waste, I'd need to learn to make a lot of the products I use myself. Nearly everything that is available at the store is packaged in plastic.
At first, even thinking about making all of my own makeup seemed incredibly tedious and intimidating. Most cosmetics have a ton of ingredients in them, most of which I have never heard of - where was I going to find all of those different ingredients and "save" money. I realized then, that had to be an issue in itself. Should there be so many mystery ingredients in a product that is applied directly to my skin? There had to be an easier, more natural way to get and make cosmetics. Well, there is and I'll discuss a couple of ways to make a unanimous favorite - blush.
If you can find it in your bulk spice department, look for
beet powder. The work has been done for you and for next to nothing you can fill a jar. It's a very vibrant magenta color and depending on the shade of blush you desire, you could leave it as is and apply it as blush all on it's own. For me though, I like to lighten it a bit so that it doesn't make me look like I'm getting ready for a circus appearance.
Fair skin problems - am I right?
To lighten the beet powder to your desired shade, you can use arrowroot powder or organic corn starch. Both will work just fine. I get arrowroot powder from my grocery store's bulk spice area along with the beet powder. Organic corn starch can be purchased in paper which can be composted later.
If you do not have access to bulk beet powder, making it from scratch is still fairly simple. Slice up a couple of beets, dehydrate them or bake them until crispy, and grind them into a powder with a food processor or blender. Simple and cheap.
